Spot
Colour Printing
Spot colour printing is not like four colour
process printing, where primary colours are used cyan, magenta,
yellow & black offering hundreds of thousands of possible
combinations to create full colour printing. Spot colour
printing uses pure colour inks. Each spot colour printing
ink is made by mixing a number of stock inks in specific
proportions to produce the desired colour. Unlike the process
colour system, spot colours are premixed. The most universal
type of spot colour printing system is Pantone Matching
System (PMS). The range of Pantone colours are defined by
a code and are usually displayed in swatch books, similar
to household paints. Spot
colour printing method is recommended where very high levels
of colour consistency are necessary. The disadvantage is
that printing costs increase with the number of spot colours
to be printed. Spot colour printing is more suitable for
images with fewer than 4 colours. In getting the most out
of your spot colour printing, you should use screens effectively.
A one colour print job with the colour being printed in
a variety of different screen can have the same effect as
multiple colours.
